Menstrual Hygiene for
Vulnerable Adolescent Girls in Nigeria

Henrie’s Empowerment for Awareness & Life (H.E.A.L.) is acutely aware of the profound impact that menstrual hygiene management (MHM) has on the lives of adolescent girls, especially in vulnerable communities. Our “Menstrual Hygiene for Vulnerable Adolescent Girls in Nigeria” initiative is meticulously designed to address this fundamental human right, recognizing that dignified menstruation is not merely a matter of health, but a pivotal determinant of a girl’s educational attainment, social participation, and overall well-being. By intervening in this critical area, H.E.A.L. aims to dismantle the barriers that prevent girls from reaching their full potential.

The initiative encompasses a multi-faceted approach:

Comprehensive Education on Menstrual Health

H.E.A.L. provides age-appropriate, accurate, and culturally sensitive education to adolescent girls, their families, and communities. This education covers the biological processes of menstruation, proper hygiene practices, management of menstrual discomfort, and dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding periods. We ensure girls understand that menstruation is a natural and healthy bodily function, not something to be ashamed of.

A key component of the initiative is the regular provision of safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate menstrual hygiene products. This can include reusable sanitary pads, disposable pads, and soap, along with guidance on their proper use and disposal. By alleviating the financial burden of purchasing these products, H.E.A.L. directly tackles a major barrier to girls’ school attendance and participation in daily life.

H.E.A.L. actively works to challenge and change negative societal perceptions and cultural taboos associated with menstruation. Through community dialogues, workshops for parents and male peers, and public awareness campaigns, we aim to create an environment where menstruation is openly discussed, understood, and accepted, rather than being a source of shame or exclusion. This includes advocating for improved sanitation facilities in schools to ensure privacy and comfort for girls.

The initiative focuses on empowering girls to manage their periods with confidence and dignity. This includes not only providing products and education but also fostering self-esteem and resilience, enabling them to navigate their menstrual cycles without fear, discomfort, or interruption to their daily routines.

By addressing the challenges of menstrual hygiene, H.E.A.L. directly contributes to reducing school absenteeism among adolescent girls. When girls have access to products, proper facilities, and accurate information, they are less likely to miss school days due to their periods, thereby improving their academic performance, retention rates, and ultimately, their future prospects.

Beyond direct service provision, H.E.A.L. engages in advocacy efforts to encourage policy changes at local and national levels that support menstrual health and hygiene, including the provision of free or subsidized products, and the integration of MHM into school curricula and health programs.

Through these concerted efforts, H.E.A.L.’s Menstrual Hygiene initiative seeks to empower vulnerable adolescent girls in Nigeria, ensuring they can experience menstruation safely, hygienically, and with dignity, thereby unlocking their full potential to learn, grow, and thrive.
